Solar in New Hampshire is back and better than ever. Gov. Hassan has signed a law doubling the state’s Net Metering cap, and the state rebate of up to $2,500 is back. Combined with the 30% federal tax credit, this means you can install solar on your property for less than ever. Here’s a summary of the programs that make going solar in the Granite State such a good deal:
- Net Metering, which gives solar owners credit for your extra solar energy, and which you then use up when you take power from the grid, such as at night. It’s sort of like rollover minutes with a cell phone plan. The previous Net Metering cap had been reached, and states around the country are caving to utility interests and re-considering Net Metering, so this is a big deal. (Update: The cap was eliminated completely in a 6/23/17 ruling by the NH PUC.)
- A State-funded rebate of up to $2,500 for systems up to 10 kilowatts (i.e. most residential systems). Don’t worry, we’ll help with the paperwork.
- Some towns exempt solar energy systems’ value from property tax increases.
- Group Net Metering, meaning you can share your extra solar energy with neighbors, friends and family.
- Finally, the Federal tax credit pays you back 30% of your purchase price. Remember, even if you get a refund from the IRS, you most likely are still paying thousands in taxes. The refund just means you over-paid during the year. With the solar tax credit, your refund check will be thousands of dollars bigger for a year or two.
