The Energy Miser

Alternatives to Solar

My headline for this blog post might have you scratching your head. Why would the president of a solar company talk about alternatives to going solar?

But since the day I started New England Clean Energy, my focus has been on helping the environment so my kids and their kids have a planet left to call Home. I have surprised many a potential customer by talking them out of solar. If someone has a major insulation problem in their historic home, for example, or a fossil of a hot water heater, I can’t help but advise them to fix those inefficiencies before thinking solar.

Our sales team uses the same approach. They ask about your entire energy picture — your usage, your goals, any issues like cold or hot spots, etc. Then they figure out if and how solar fits into that picture.

In keeping with our emphasis on overall energy efficiency, here’s an infographic with simple tips for being energy-conscious in your home. (We wrote this for people with bad solar roofs.) Please have a read, and commit to doing a few of these in your home. New England Clean Energy, future generations, and the planet thank you.
