If you’ve been following energy news recently, you may have heard that the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that could significantly impact the solar industry, specifically the end of the solar tax credit. While this bill is not yet law, if passed by the Senate without major changes, it could bring about some big shifts — especially for homeowners considering solar.
What’s Happening?
The bill proposes ending the 30% Residential Clean Energy Tax Credit (25D) at the end of this year. That means if it becomes law in its current form, homeowners will lose the ability to claim this key federal incentive for solar systems installed after 2025. The bill would also eliminate the 30% Commercial Tax Credit (48C) for projects not started within 60 days of the bill being signed. Homeowners and businesses would still be able to go solar, but their payback period would be longer.
Why The End of the Solar Tax Credit Matters
About 5% of American households now use solar, nearly doubling over the past few years. This growth has been fueled in part by the federal tax credit, which makes going solar more affordable for homeowners. But this new legislation threatens to reverse that progress — just when clean energy is more important than ever for fighting climate change and reducing energy bills.
What Happens Next?
The bill now moves to the Senate, where lawmakers will debate and likely revise it before sending it back to the House. Once the two chambers agree on a final version, it will go to the President — which could happen as early as August.
What You Can Do — It’s Easy and Powerful
Several trusted voices in the solar industry — including REC Americas, EnergySage, and others — are urging action, and so are we. Here’s how you can help:
1. Tell Lawmakers Solar Matters
Let your senators and representatives in the house know that the 30% solar tax credit is important for you, your wallet, your community, and the planet. Emphasize the benefits: job creation, lower electricity costs, energy independence, and climate progress. Prefer a quick way to reach out? Use this form.
2. Share Your Solar Story
Consumer Reports wants to hear from you, and we’d love it if you spoke up, particularly if your experience has been positive.
Consumer Reports is gathering stories from homeowners to better understand how people make the choice to go solar.
They’d like to know things like how easy or difficult it was for you to find a contractor and prepare your home for installation? Did you get the system size you wanted and achieve the cost savings you expected? And overall, are you satisfied with your experience, or are there things you’d do differently next time?
Your experience can help inform other consumers—as well as the entire solar debate.

3. Spread the Word
Do you know friends, family, or neighbors with solar? Please forward this message to them, so they can speak up and share their experiences too. The more voices we have, the stronger the message is.
4. Act Now to Lock in the Tax Credit
If you’ve been thinking about solar, now is the time. Under the current version of the bill, solar systems must be installed by the end of this year to qualify for the 30% tax credit. We’re currently booking installations for late summer and early fall, so don’t wait. Because the time between making a commitment and getting installed is roughly four months! Don’t let others get in front of you.
Is Solar Still Worth It Without the Credit?
Absolutely. While the tax credit shortens the payback period (typically 6–8 years), even without it most systems will still pay off in 7–9 years — and start saving money right away. Solar is still the most affordable way to generate electricity, especially as energy rates rise. And systems with battery storage provide even more value and resilience.
