A few years ago, we never would have installed solar on the east- and west-facing roofs of this ranch home. Only the small south-facing section of the hip roof would have been considered a “good roof”.

But as solar panel prices have dropped, the economics have improved. Installing on three sides of this roof made perfect sense, and allowed the family to cover 99% of its electric bill with solar.

The low pitch of this roof helps too, by making it easier for sunlight to reach the panels throughout the day.
