Embracing Solar Energy: The Path Towards an Eco-Friendly Home

Martine Behra and her family in New Hampshire had always envisioned their home being energy-neutral with a minimal carbon footprint. The desire to use solar energy in New Hampshire was a long-held aspiration, and when their roof was redone and they had good sun exposure, it became a question of when, not why, to make the jump.
“We would like to use no more than what we produce,” Behra explained. “We have always been very environmentally aware, especially with how we use electricity. This is just a continuation of that mindset.”
Their commitment to environmental consciousness and responsible energy consumption led Behra and her family to pursue solar energy. However, it wasn’t until 2023, when they were financially ready, that they could embark on this goal. Local company options were considered, and after deliberation, New England Clean Energy was chosen, primarily due to their flexibility in panel placement. 
Throughout the installation process, Behra was impressed with the communication and updates from Eversource and New England Clean Energy. With everything expertly installed on a clear winter day, Behra found the entire process to be remarkably easy, and the team ensured she was well-versed in running the Enphase app to monitor their energy production.
Despite only receiving the solar tax rebate benefits in 2024, the family felt a sense of contribution to the climate solution rather than being a part of the problem. Behra emphasized the importance of understanding the financial and environmental costs associated with energy consumption, and she appreciated the opportunity to produce her own energy.
Having their solar energy system in New Hampshire has been immensely satisfying to Behra. It allows them to efficiently meet most of their energy needs and has significantly reduced their summer electricity bill from around $250 to just $40 (and much of that is the utility’s fixed monthly fee). Behra’s commitment to conserving energy remains unchanged, but she no longer feels guilty when using air conditioning.

While Behra conducted substantial research prior to the installation, she expresses some regret in involving Eversource, as they were not supportive of individuals going solar. Despite their discouragement, Behra’s resolve to go solar remained strong.
Having now experienced the benefits of solar energy for a few months, Behra encourages potential solar customers to go for it, advising thorough research and selecting reputable local companies with positive reviews. With a satisfied tone, she urges others to take the leap towards a greener future.
